Release: Troop 98 Conducts Wilderness Survival Campout:
CAMP SID RICHARDSON, TEXAS (December 18,
2005) - Members of Troop 98 battled the elements over the weekend to
conduct wilderness survival and skills training. The activity,
which was set up by Ranger Patrol Leader Jonathan Rhodes, tested the
resolve of the participants as they worked to reach their goals
despite cold winds, cold rain and cold fires - due to fire ban.
Acting Senior Patrol Leaders Drew Ringgold and Michael Davidson led
the occupation and setup of the initial campsite on Friday evening.
Saturday morning, working with Mr. Rhoades, the three led the troop
on a hike in search of a new area to occupy and conduct the survival
training. Overseeing the process was Eagle Scout and current Junior
Assistant Scoutmaster Jeffrey Davidson, who had led previous
survival campouts.
Upon occupation of the new site, the troop received a refresher in
shelter construction and where then released with nothing but nature
and their imaginations to work with. The outcome was several
outstanding shelters being constructed and utilized that evening -
including one assembled by guest Weblos II Brett Ringgold from Pack
98.
For their efforts, the troop was treated to hot peach cobbler fresh
from the Dutch oven of chef Jeff Rhoades. There were plenty of
smiles, laughter and assistance provided to one another throughout
the weekend.
Campout Evaluation:
Positive things:
- (Almost) everyone built quality all natural survival
shelters.
- There were enough natural resources at the site to support
every one's shelters.
- Peach Cobbler
Things that could use
improvement:
- The shelters took so long, few other requirements were
completed.
- More thorough instruction on what to bring, and what NOT to
bring.
- Planning in warmer weather so more people could attend.
- Having maps from the church to the camp to avoid getting
lost.
- Not having a fire ban...
- Faster camp breakdown Saturday morning.
Possible solutions and changes for
future camp outs:
- Build Shelters in Patrol groups or Buddy groups- two pairs
of hands work better than one.
- Get there early on Friday (maybe around noon) and build
shelters Friday night, therefore having Saturday for other
requirements.
All and all, everyone found it a successful camp out, and were
excitedly talking about next year's possibilities.
