Leadership:

Scoutmaster

Current Troop 98 Scoutmaster:

Mr. Ringgold

The Scoutmaster (SM) is the adult leader responsible for the image and program of the Troop. The SM and his Assistant SMs work directly with the Scouts. The importance of the SM's job is reflected in the fact that the quality of his guidance will impact every youth and adult involved in the Troop.

Duties:

  • Train and guide boy leaders. More specifically, train the SPL to run the Troop.

  • Work with other responsible adults to bring Scouting to the boys.

  • Use the eight methods of Scouting to achieve the three aims of Scouting.

  • Meet regularly with the PLC for training and coordination in planning Troop activities.

  • Attend all Troop meetings or, when necessary, arrange for a qualified adult substitute.

  • Conduct periodic parent sessions to share the program and encourage parental participation and cooperation.

  • Take part in annual membership inventory and uniform inspection, charter review meeting, and charter presentation.

  • Conduct SM conferences for all rank advancements.

  • Provide a systematic recruiting plan for new members and see that they are promptly registered. (This is the direct responsibility of the Assistant SM for new Scouts).

  • Delegate responsibility to other adults and groups (i.e. Assistants, Troop Committee) so that they have a real part in Troop operations.

  • Make it possible for each Scout to experience at least 10 days and nights of camping each year.

  • Participate in council and District events.

  • Build a strong program by using proven methods presented in Scouting literature.

  • Conduct all activities under qualified leadership, safe conditions, and the policies of the Chartered Organization and the BSA.

  • Wear proper uniform at Troop meetings and activities.

Qualifications:

  • Must be male, 21 years old or older.

  • Must be registered with the BSA as an adult leader.

  • Must be a parent of a boy in the Troop.

  • Must be the kind of person that we would want our own sons to be influenced by and whose judgment will always be in the best interest of our boys. The BSA has found the top ten characteristics of a successful SM, in descending order of importance, to be:

    1. High moral standards.

    2. Commitment to the ideals of Scouting.

    3. Ability to relate to boys.

    4. Ability to keep a "cool head" under pressure.

    5. Organizing ability.

    6. Ability to relate to and interact with adults.

    7. Flexibility and the ability to compromise.

    8. Planning ability.

    9. A high energy level.

    10. Attention to detail.

  • Must be trained in Fast Start and have taken the Basic Leader Training Course offered by the Longhorn Council.

  • He is appointed by the Troop Committee and approved by NETCACHE President.

  • Qualifications may be amended by the Troop Committee.

  • The Scoutmaster must be confirmed annually.
