Leadership:

Senior Patrol Leader

Current Troop 98 Senior Patrol Leader:

Jonathan A.

Duties:

  • He is the top junior leader in the Troop and presides at all Troop meetings, events, and functions.

  • He leads the Patrol Leaders Council (PLC) and, in consultation with the Scoutmaster, appoints other junior leaders and assigns specific responsibilities as needed.

  • He is responsible for the conduct of the Troop at all organized activities.

  • In addition to PLC meetings, the SPL must be committed to meeting with the SM on a regular basis, (typically by phone), as determined by the SM.

  • Contact by phone, or in person, all of the Patrol Leaders each week, at least four days prior to the Troop meeting or activity. The following items need to be discussed:

    • Explain the Troop meeting or activity.

    • If the PL was absent from the last meeting, inform him of the proceedings.

    • Ask about the Patrol...what is happening...any problems or concerns...and offer help.

    • Ask if he has any ideas or topics to discuss at the PLC meeting.

    • Encourage and compliment him and his Patrol.

  • Set the example:

    • Earn regular advancement.

    • Live by the Scout Oath and Law.

    • Wear the uniform correctly.

    • Use BSA Handbook and the Patrol Leader Handbook for guidelines.

    • While the position of SPL is the most difficult and time consuming in the Troop, it offers the Scout an outstanding opportunity to grow in leadership and ability. Every Scout should aspire to serve in this office.

Qualifications:

  • Elected by the Troop.

  • Star rank or higher.

  • Be a member of the Troop for at least six months.

  • Have attended at least one long-term camp.

  • Demonstrate consistent attendance at Troop meetings and monthly campouts.

  • Demonstrate active progress toward the next rank or earn additional merit badges.

  • Agree to attend District or Council-level training courses designed to help him serve in his office.

  • Scoutmaster(s) can amend the qualifications for this position at any time.
